Kitchen Design Essex
The Property
The property for this project was a beautiful farmhouse set in 22 acres of farmland including 3 acres of residential curtilage. The client brief was to open 4 seperate rooms into one large kitchen space.
Construction
The task was to remove four internal supporting walls to make one large room. With provision to re-route the soil pipe which ran down the central supporting column.
Structural calculations and building regulation approval was undertaken and work began with the removal of all existing kitchen fittings. We then set about supporting all the walls and floors above.
The main steel was installed with two crane lifts, a vertical steel either end on to concrete footings 450 x 450 x 900 were installed. Two additional steels to support the floor above were installed. They had vertical steels on to concrete pads on either end. They were fabricated, plated and bolted to the main steel. A spreader plate was installed underneath with webbing reinforcement which was all welded on site and in situ.
The soil pipe was then run alongside one of the beams to the outside and run to a new man hole which connected to existing one.
Electrical and plumbing first fix was then undertaken with fireproofing then applied to the structure. The whole room was then plastered.
As the floors were not level to each other a heavy screed was applied to the whole room to give a level pad.
The floor area was then fully tiled.
When the kitchen was installed we had unusual height issues to consider. If you look at the fridge image and the larder image at the opposite end of the room you can see how close to the steel beams the kitchen units are.
Unless luck is on your side, this attention to sizing can only be provided through bespoke manufacture. In this instance we used Störmer Küchen for flexibility in a traditional design with modern and up to the minute internal detail.
The construction work took 5 weeks in total to a painted and tiled finish with a further 2 weeks to install the kitchen & granite.
The Layout
Working with the clients we knew we had to create a unique and individual design. One which was truly bespoke with every aspect built perfectly to suit their specific needs. This kitchen was to play more than just its typical role in day to day life and we had to develop something special.
Straight away we knew that removing the four walls would create a fantastic space to work with. We focused on creating specific zones for an efficient and functional kitchen, living and working space.
The Rangemaster Induction cooker defines the cooking area and situating it on the island creates that visual anchor and central role for the client. With the sink and fridge freezer located close-by, the huge space doesn't need to create excess 'leg work' even when cooking a simple meal.
The 'T' shaped island provides many functions. Perhaps most importantly, it is home to the cooker but it also serves as storage and seating as well as the added feature of the pop up and swivel mounted television. The island was treated to a special 'double ogee' edge finish to the worktop. This island really maximized the surface potential of such a large room.
Ample storage was provided for in the form of a double pantry cabinet with an internal pullout mechanism. The clients love of wine was catered for with a bespoke wine rack and under-counter fridge on the island.
There was a specific area of the room dedicated to casual seating with a fantastic view of the grounds. The ideal space for a client working from home.
